Sunset Bch to Belmont Shores Winter Up/Down...
|
1/18/08 6:11 PM
I got very lucky to pull off another Sunset Bch (16th St.) to Belmont Shores and back up wind/down winder on 1/17/08. I left 16th St in Sunset Beach at 2pm with no intention of doing anything but playing in the waves up in Surfside. The waves weren’t very good when I got up to Surfside but the wind was filling in so....... It took me a while to get upwind of the Naval station jetty. Maybe 10-12 tacks to be up wind enough to safely cross the Huntington harbor entrance. From there it was one tack, all the way into Seal Beach. The warm water of the jetty felt so good. Made it upwind of the Alamitos bay breakwater but as soon as I got into Long Beach harbor I could see that the wind wasn't filling in all the way to Claremont ramp. I got past the wind shadow of Chaffee island but immediately I started to run into large pieces of drift wood. I even saw a pallet float by. With the wind dying and the amount of debris in that nasty harbor water I knew it was time to turn around and head back. I didn’t want to go for a swim. I turned around at the 55th Pl. Lifeguard tower, barely made it back through the Chaffee island wind shadow and just cleared the Alamitos bay jetty getting back down/out to Seal Bch. It was one super fast down winder all the way back to 16th St. in Sunset. I played in the waves at 16th St. till I couldn’t feel my hands anymore. Packed up and back to the car by 4pm. It was an amazing first kite session for 2008.
